Love Potion #9

My mum's a huge fan of alternative medicine, and all things herby. So when a Malay friend of hers informed her that a common garden weed had amazing properties in preventing urinary tract infection (more effective than cranberry juice, apparently), I found her in the garden weeding. But not for the purpose of removing house-plant-choking wild grasses.

She was only picking out these particular weeds in stashing them into a little plastic container for later use:

Looks familiar? As far as I remember, these plants grow literally everywhere where there's a little dirt or soil, with damp places with sufficient moisture (which means just about anywhere here in humid Malaysia).

With smallish heart-shaped leaves, fleshy stems, and green flowering stalks dotted with what I assume is the pollen, these weeds can grow to surprisingly robust sizes - I've seen specimens up to almost 30cm tall before, growing in the fertile dirt next to drains, or even in flower-pots.

The ones my mum managed to collect were all small and straggly. A rather blatant testament to her green thumb - even weeds cannot flourish in her garden HAHAHA.

Anyway, I wasn't aware of her plan to boil it into a decoction for testing on me as a guinea pig (I seem to be pretty prone to urinary tract infection, due to my tendency not to consume enough liquids) until she'd cooked up a huge potful of it. And when she tried coaxing me to drink it I feigned exhaustion and promptly fell asleep on my favourite sofa with Cookie.

An hour later I was shaken awake by Mrs. Chan and informed that dinner was ready. Still semi-conscious, I walked into the kitchen on auto-pilot. On the way there, I was handed a glass of water by mummy dearest.

Blindly, I took a big gulp of it.

And spluttered.

And almost choked on the greenish-yellow liquid in the glass.

How cunning of her to trick me into drinking her newest miracle cure!

Urgh!

And it wouldn't even be the first time she did something like this to me. Why am I still so gullible... =(

It wasn't at all unpleasant, to be honest, quite tasteless in fact, with a mild, herby, earthy, almost aromatic fragrance that would've been quite acceptable if I didn't know that I was consuming weed-water.

Anyway, if anyone wants to try this traditional herbal remedy for UTI, do keep in mind not to harvest plants that might have been exposed to chemicals, ie. pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers. It might kill you instead of cure you. And if you really do try it, let me know some feedback on its effectiveness - I'm really curious to know!

Oh, and does anyone know the name of this plant? Scientific, common, or Malay name, anyone?

hey! my mom used to boil drinks using that herb for like umm.. body over heat. heard sth like it's good for the eyes or sth. not sure which. cool! the antibiotics healed me. i might just go hunting for it to make herbal drinks now and then ;) thanks for the tip. i'll link this entry.

sam: hey go ahead. if it works, spread the word. but i really didn't believe my mum when she practically tried to pour it down my throat. i mean, that's the pesky weed that grows everywhere and has to be removed all the time - didn't even bother thinking about its possible medicinal properties.

i'm quite sure you'll be able to find some in your garden though, these things are so damn pervasive! i notice that they seem to grow especially well in damp dirt, of all things.

erm, i'll stick to cranberry juice :)

my late paternal grandmother was pretty good at identifying medicinal plants. last i remembered, she dried some tiny leaves to be made into tea. good for the kidneys.

oh, and she once boiled some reddish purple leaves that turned the water the colour of ribena. good for what also i forgot, but we being obedient grandchildren never question. :)

willchua: haha. why? you've a mum who makes you drink herbal remedies too?

hedo: my grandma too, but none of us grandkids will willingly drink all those herbal decoctions she comes up with, so i guess she kinda gave up and stuck to regular liang cha instead.

the reddish purple leaves i've tried before. nice colour, but didn't half like the taste or the idea that it was SOME WATER BOILED FROM SOME PLANT that i was drinking.

i'm not very adventurous when it comes to things like this. i prefer NOT drinking herbal drinks AT ALL, all the more so if it's an unfamiliar plant in it.

The reddish purple leaf tea? Supposed to be good for high blood pressure. But it has this yucky, sticky taste which I don't like.

My mum drinks aloe vera juice too but hers is the "unsugared" variety so I don't drink that too.

emeric: unsugared variety? my mum drinks that too. apparently my youngest sis doesn't mind that. i don't really either, but overall, i'm quite wary about herbal stuff. had enough forced on me when i was a kid - was chronically sick and had severe bronchitis so my mum and grandma practically tried everything.

arth: yeah, but that's only because you're sometimes really weird hehehe. it doesn't actually taste bad anyway, just... unfamiliar. hmm.

hornyangmoh: i think you can just try it as a cooling tea, not sure if it'll actually do anything for your dick, but you can take some and then get feedback from your girlfriend hahaha.

sam: i've taken enough herbal remedies in my childhood to leave a lasting mistrust and paranoia of such stuff.

exam over, but one my assignment due. and then two more after my one week break. we'll see how it goes. might still have baby-sitting duty on heheh.

If anyone mention that such and such herb is good for health, very soon i'm gonna be the guinea pig for that herb soup. @_@
